Meeting with the Ambassador of the Republic of Italy
President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić met earlier today with the Ambassador of the Republic of Italy Carlo Lo Cascio, who conveyed the greetings of President Sergio Mattarella and presented his New Year greeting with the best wishes for peace, progress and happiness of our country.
Ambassador Lo Cascio said that Italy strongly advocates the enlargement of the European Union and renders its strong support to the European path of Serbia, and added that the upcoming visit of the Italian Minister of European Affairs represents the demonstration of this support. He emphasised that Italy is one of the sixteen EU member countries which signed the letter to the European Commission underlining that the European integrations are the best way to implement long-lasting stability and security of the Western Balkans.
President Vučić thanked Italy for its continued support for the European integration of Serbia. At the same time, he expressed the necessity for a clear EU enlargement plan and a membership timetable, as the European integration process is important for peace and stability in the region. President Vučić emphasised that Serbia, with the same goal of regional stability, will continue to promote the policy of peace and cooperation. In this regard, he briefed Ambassador Lo Cascio on an initiative to implement the four freedoms - the movement of people, goods, services and capital in the Western Balkans. Ambassador Lo Cascio said the initiative is important for the region.
The two interlocutors agreed that they are satisfied with the level of bilateral relations between Serbia and Italy, concluding that there is still room for strengthening of economic cooperation. Ambassador Lo Cascio said that there is a growing interest of Italian small and middle-size enterprises in doing business in Serbia, reflecting the increasingly better economic situation in our country.
President Vučić said he is convinced that the Government of Serbia would soon decide to help the Italian region of Veneto to remedy the consequences of the recent catastrophic floods in Venice.
