Meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan

President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić met today with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan Sirodjiddin Muhriddin, the first foreign minister of that country ever to visit Belgrade and that in the year marking the twenty-five years of establishment of diplomatic relations between our two countries.

President Vučić said that Serbia is grateful to Tajikistan for not recognizing the unilaterally declared independence of so-called Kosovo, thus demonstrating respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of our country. "Serbia will maintain the ties with friendly countries such as Tajikistan, with mutual support in various international forums. We will develop cooperation in the areas with real opportunities and mutual interest, and that cooperation will become more and more important for us," said President Vućić. He expressed his hope that intensifying political dialogue would also accelerate the development of economic cooperation and called on President Emomali Rahmon and other Tajik officials to visit Serbia.

Minister Muhriddin conveyed the greetings of President Rahmon and his best wishes for the progress of Serbia as well as the invitation to President Vučić to visit Tajikistan.

The two interlocutors agreed that opportunities for cooperation exist in many areas such as agriculture, water management, textile, pharmacy, mining and energy, provided that a legal basis is previously created as one of the preconditions for improving economic cooperation. It was suggested that this cooperation should also be fostered by the formation of an Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation.

Minister Muhriddin also suggested strengthening of ties in the fields of tourism, culture and education aimed at getting the two nations to know each other better. With that in mind, President Vučić suggested that Tajik students use the scholarships from the "Serbia and the World" programme.
